Has anyone worked on converting an old gouger to a functional reed profiler?
I am trying to think outside the box here.
I am fine with profiling before tying or after.
I just purchased a couple of used gougers and I am keeping one as a backup to my regular machine but the third one is open for experimentation. I have been toying with the idea of just investing in a cheap profiler to help me knock out a couple layers of cane before getting my hands dirty. I feel like a waste a lot of time just scraping of the first few layers.
Structurally they are designed in a similar fashion. I would have to develop a profile template and a holding system for the reed.
Again not trying to make finished reeds on this. I just want to move the starting place up a notch.

All I can say is that if you were able to just scrape the bark off the cane, you'd probably sell a lot of great blanks to the rest of us.
(I appreciate machinists... one of my oboe teachers actually built a functioning English horn from metal, and my grandfather was a machinist.)
Happy inventing/adapting!

While it could be possibly be done, I think the amount of effort that would have to go into it really wouldn't be worth it in the end.
If the gougers are similar, you could set one of them to gouge at ~.70mm down the center and use it as a pregouger to reduce the wear on the blade on the other machine(s).

tfriendle: I was planning to use is as a pregouger in the mean time. Until I can find a good deal on a profiler.
I make about 20 reeds a week to sell and anything that can speed up the process helps. I got out of playing a while ago because my hands where starting to hurt more frequently.
I can admit that I'm not much of an oboe player but I have found a real calling in reedmaking. Reedmaking is my hobby!

I'm SURE that's true, especially when the carrier service loses your product in the mail somewhere. :(
