Any professional clarinetists have any advice about getting back into shape after not practicing for a few months? any good warm-up routines or whatever for a doctorate student? and if any of my students are reading this...i'm asking for a friend :) yeah, really!

I recommend:
1. long tones (chromatic scale up and down, one tone per breath, pp-crescendo-ff-decrescendo-pp, watch to keep the intonation and not getting sharp at the end)
and
2. finger studies (I prefer the short finger studies of the Baermann method - I'm playing the german system)
and do not forget to increase the time per day you play carefully.
You should reach an acceptable level again within three or four weeks even if you stoped playing for a couple of years.

I hope this helps (and your friend doesn't have to solve some reed problems)

Dannene -

I can speak from personal experience, as I have had some long breaks. Things will come back quicker than you expect, and regardless of what music you play. The only essential thing is to practice every day, quit for the day when you get tired, and build up endurance at your body's own pace.

After a layoff, I start with the first set of etudes in Part 2 of the Lazarus method. They are good music, and I enjoy playing them. I then work my way through all the way to the end of Part 3.

I think it's very important to resume making music from the very first note. You can leave the scales and other strong medicine for later. Doing what gives you pleasure will keep you coming back.

Good luck.

I agree - start with your favorite stuff.
for me, it can mean scales or Bach or straight funk with a JB record!
