I've played the vintage but I don't own one, the sound in my opinion is somewhat brighter but not significantly. That's just my opinion. Also the vintage soesn't have that extra key which comes in handy once in a while.

I have had one for about a year and absolutely love it! Of course, I made the big jump from my Dad's old Normandy that I had had since 6th grade to the Vintage that I got my junior year of high school (I'll be a college freshman this fall)

I don't know much about how the clarinet is designed, but I know the C/G hole is 1mm lower than normal, and the bell is 1mm longer. Supposedly the design is a throwback to the old R-13's of the 50s and 60s.

Not having the extra Ab/Eb key doesn't make that much difference to me. It's nothing that a little nose grease won't do! (that's a really gross thought, though -- I had to do that in an All-State etude once)

The Vintage model comes with 2 barrels: a reverse cone and a straight cylinder, depending on what sound you want. Again, I don't know exactly what difference each barrel makes, but I interchange them for various performances like concert band or chamber pieces.

Aside from the technical stuff, the clarinet is BEAUTIFUL! On mine, the grain of the wood shows through gorgeously because the wood is unstained. It's actually brown not black.

Regarding the sound, my high school band directors said my clarinet sounded like "chocolate," if you can transfer sensory images like that. I think it sounds great. My clarinet teacher also has one and gives the Vintage glowing remarks. She studied under Edwin Riley and is a graduate of the Cincinnati Conservatory.

If you have any other questions, please email me or post them. I'll follow this topic.

I've only played three or four at various conventions. I've been very happy with them. They have a slightly more open sound. But they have a beautiful ring to it and seem to have good projection. I haven't had the time to sit down, any of the times i've tried them, and see how they are in the way of tuning.
My teacher has had mixed feelings... some at a convention he liked, but one that a friend had on trial he didn't. But i suppose that's the case with any clarinet.

i'm wondering if there's any recommendation for the vintage OVER the r-13- but as you've said, i'm sure it just depends on the clarinet. i'm wondering if there are really any characteristics that would really make one go for this model instead of the r-13. maybe not. thanks for your thoughts, though!

I know the next time i ever have enough money or a need to replace my Bb, it will probably be with a Vintage. But i don't see myself in need of a new clarinet for atleast 10 years, though i'll probably be replacing my R-13 A sometime while i'm still on my undergrad course, as it's not making me as happy as some other R-13 A's i've played before.
