 Reeds and mouthpieces.

Can somebody give me a clear understanding of why I would want a particular type of reed to go with a particular faced mouthpiece. I have read the Vandorn Little info sheet, and think that it really does not go deep enough.

So could you give me a simple explanation of Mouthpiece facing, and what it accomplishes.

Also, what strength reed you would put with what face and why.

Quick and dirty, you generally want a softer reed for a more open mouthpiece. There is, of course, a lot of variation but that is the general rule of thumb.

If you try to use a soft reed on a mouthpiece with a very small tip opening, the damp reed will flex too much and "stick" to the face of the mouthpiece too long when it touches it. This makes it hard too play.

If you try to use a hard reed on a mouthpiece with a large tip opening, the reed may not flex enough to ever "close" at the tip when it vibrates. This gives very poor tone quality.

Thus for the best results on tone quality, the reed stiffness needs to be a good match for the mouthpiece tip opening so that it will touch the mouthpiece just the right amount in its vibration.
