 Amati background clarinet (bass)

I've been researching Bb bass clarinets and came across an
Amati Background Clarinet. What exactly do they mean by 'background'? The prices are not bad for a wood bass clarinet ($2,000+ new).

It merely means that it is not a standard Bb or A soprano clarinet. The bassethorn, alto clarinet, bass clarinet, contra-alto, and contrabass are all classified as "background" or "harmony" clarinets. This is because they usually function as part of the over all background harmonic structure in band and orchestral compositions and rarely have solo lines. Now of course in background music for films, they get a lot of solo lines for invoking all kinds of dramatic atmosphere.
