Left and right side E / B key
Author: Jason M

Hopefully I am naming the key correctly. When I play in the Clarion register to produce a B I am experiencing some odd problems occasionaly. If I play from the B up or down, the B sometimes squeeks or won't play, however if I play from another note to the B it is generaly fine, but can blow through occasionaly (horrid sound). When the clarinet is warmed up, it is generaly fine. Could it be down to mouth tiredness or perhaps too much moisture? This is a problem sometimes, but it is odd it is only this note.

Anyone has a similar problem?

Many thanks

J

Thanks for pointing me, but it does not seem to be the same problem. I don't really have a problem with the actual changes, it is the sounding oif the note, most particularily when I am sounding the note straight from B. I have just tried a run down to the B and keeping my fingering at the same point and it is fine, tried to go up, and the B squeeks. Tried again and it is fine, I feel I am being consistant, but who knows ay!

I would be willing to bet it is a small leak. These large pads are much more difficult to adjust than the others and even pros don't always get it quite right. Or the key itself could be a little off or the spring tension could be a little off. Take it to a tech and have it checked. It doesn't take much to cause exactly the problem you describe.

Thanks, I will get someone to look at it.

Sometimes, one of the long left-hand levers will flex and actually contact another lever or key, occasionally causing another pad to open inadvertently, causing a squeak. This can be a subtle defect and may be hard to find, but I've seen it a lot. Have a tech check it out for you.
