Does anybody know anything about R. Dupin clarinets: handcrafted clarinets made in Zurich? This craftsman makes oboes that are played by top people. I can't find much on the net, namely their price. Buying one probably involves mortgaging your house!

Hi Licorice! Good question. I see: R. Dupin Clarinet Zürich and then see the company is based in Luxembourg. Misleading, all of this. Maybe the model is called "Zürich". The principal oboist of the Orchestre National de France plays a Dupin.

Needless to say, it's not because they make good oboes that they necessarily make good clarinets. Marigaux makes fine oboes, but were unsuccessful with the clarinet they made in the 80s.

According to their website, the "brand" is "R. Dupin Zurich"; the only clarinet model it mentions is "Aristocrate". It says that the brand is Swiss, made in Luxembourg. R. Dupin is, or was, the father of the current custodian of the brand, Christophe Edouard Dupin. As they have a website and a Facebook page, I guess you can send a message to enquire about prices - and other info.

Needless to say, it wasn't that Marigaux, Howarth and others were 'unsuccessful' in making clarinets as they made excellent clarinets, it's simply because they couldn't compete with the brand popularity of Buffet.

Chris: True! But, according to my professional clarinetist friends here in France, the Marigaux weren't very good. I, personally, have never tried one.
