 Hindemith Sonata articulation question
Author: nellsonic
Date:   2021-01-26 04:51

Does anyone have any insight about the seemingly random use of staccato markings in the fourth movement of the Hindemith Sonata? The main theme quarter notes are marked strangely differently almost every time the theme occurs. It feels uncharacteristic of him to be this sloppy or unclear. I believe Schott is still the only edition and is the one I have.

In researching this I contacted the Hindemith Foundation in Germany and they were kind enough to send a PDF of the meticulous manuscript that Hindemith prepared for publication. It appears that the articulation variation is deliberate!

They also let me know that there is a complete Hindemith wind music edition put out by Schott in 2003 that includes some scholarship that might be of interest. It is expensive to purchase but I hope to be able to access it once the pandemic relents through the university library system.
