Feeling like garbage because I have no talent for the clarinet/music
Author: PutnamFellow161
Date:   2020-03-03 02:59

Is there an innate talent component to success on the clarinet? I worked so hard to make the All-State band in high school, but I never made it while there were others who did with possibly less work. I don't get it. I've recently picked up the clarinet after a 2-year hiatus, but my tone quality is still the same on my new R13. My former clarinet teacher gave up on me for being horrible. That's what I think. Could it be that my IQ is just too low?

I do think there is a talent component to it, but wanting to play and enjoying it get you most of the way. I suggest:
1. Have your clarinet checked by a tech.
2. Listen to lots of clarinet music, become inspired!
3. Find a group to play with, which will give you goals and motivation.

I asked a question. What's wrong with it?

We've been through this in at least one thread before. Your clarinet playing is probably just fine, but I don't think you are going to hear that.

I am going to assume (perhaps naively) that you are posting this way in good faith, so I will say this with all honesty, sincerity, empathy and sympathy:

You need help that this board cannot provide. We are not equipped to help you work through your relationship with yourself.

A therapist is, though.

In January of last year you wrote,

>>Hey all,
>>I just made the TMEA All-State Band last Saturday, and I want to know if
>> there are any similar competitions at the college level.

Then in August of last year you wrote,

>> I wanted to be one of the best in the state. That was my goal, and it was
>> disappointing and depressing to see that goal not come to fruition despite
>> all of my hard work. I have seen the look on some of the band members'
>> faces when I didn't make All-State for the third and fourth times.

So, for starters, did you make All-State Band on January 12, 2019 (the Saturday before your 1/15 post) or didn't you?

In this post you write,

>>I've recently picked up the clarinet after a 2-year hiatus,

If you haven't played for the last 2 years, what were you writing about in January and August 2019?

You aren't asking questions so much as creating melodrama for whatever your own reasons may be. But at the very least, you should explain why your posts seem so inconsistent.

BTW, are you now majoring in Astrophysics in college? How are those studies going?

I graduated in 2018, so 2019 wasn't a possibility.

I did horribly in my college courses, because of low IQ. I don't have motivation to do anything anymore because of my mediocre life. I did play the clarinet from time to time hoping to get great at it eventually, but I don't think that I have the talent for it like the All-Staters who beat me all four years. I'm taking a gap year from college, because my life has gone to a new low. Of course, it had to go down to a new low because I'm always mediocre.

Hope you are enjoying this, but it is getting very old. In your last thread I asked you to post something of yourself playing, but you didn't. Here we are are, another year wasted. If you had posted something of you playing some of the great players here would have helped you. But you want to feel sorry for yourself, or is this a joking thread to see who responds?

My offer is still on the table. Post something of you playing.

You insulted me by refusing to practice more than your competition to catch up and get ahead. I am guessing this is some sort of Joke. If you post something then we can maybe help. If not we know this is a joke and you are a fake.

We all lose challenges. We only have to win a few to get that great job. Did the great David Shifrin, a grad from Interlochen Arts Academy and Concerto winner, then a Curtis Institute grad give up when he lost the Montreal Symphony job? No, a short time later he got into perhaps the top 5 orchestras in the USA, The Cleveland Orchestra. So go practice. Shiffrin was only 22 or 23 when he got in.

Guess who lost a Cleveland Orchestra audition? You seem to idolize him in your last post. Ricardo did. He didn't leave and give up, nor complain, he won other positions such as Philly.

Since you don't want to practice you can also try the saxes. Maybe you would be better playing those. No I'm not telling you to give up the clarinet. I play both instruments. I find the sax a shade easier to play. Good luck!

Oh, I forgot, I don't care if you play on an R13 handpicked by the one of the finest players in the world. The horn won't win auditions and produce a beautiful sound. Only you can do that with total dedication. Taking off all of that time and not practicing was a serious mistake. Let's see if you can recover. Start practicing 5 plus hours a day. What's the worst that will happen? You already failed, so there's only a one way road now - forward. You've hit rock bottom. Maybe your next goal is to major in music then audition for some of the military bands. They love people that play the clarinet and saxes.

you wrote - "I’d be content if I will still be inferior to someone on the level of Martin Frost or Ricardo Morales, but not the jerks who beat me."

Practice and post yourself playing. Maybe you don't play the horns at all. Someone pranked you into writing this?

As you are reading this post you could be practicing. Last year when you stopped playing you lost 2100 hours of practice per year. Why are you still writing? Go practice.

I've lost motivation, because I feel like I have no talent for the clarinet. Don't you get it? I never made the All-State band despite practicing for it for hours every day.

Yes I get it. You've lost your desire and the love for music, maybe? You actually sound like you love music. It's not really losing that competition that's in your way.

Approach music as a passion not as defeat. Music is a beautiful thing to find joy with. There's a place in the music world for everyone. You don't have to be Ricardo just have to be honest with yourself and practice not to win but to enjoy the rest of your life.

I would respectfully suggest that no one responds further to Putnam's posts of this nature until he posts a sample of his playing. Putnam - Bob (and Karl and Max and others) are giving you tough love. It's what you need right now if have been authentic in what you've written. If you haven't been authentic you don't deserve any more responses anyway. This will be the last I'll have to say about it without a playing sample. I'm rooting for you!

Some of the best advice I’ve ever been given:

“You can’t help someone who doesn’t want to help themselves”

OP is in a hole and he’s the only one with a shovel. This has nothing to do with talent, IQ or clarinet playing.
