 Jupiter 1100S Bb clarinet

I am interested in a good wood intermediate clarinet but not a new Buffet. I have heard some negatives. My local music store recommended the Jupiter 1100S. They had a client who tried a new R13 and the Jupiter and selected the Jupiter. I sent an email to my repairman to get his recommendation from a repair, availability of supplies and key durability point of view. I am a bassoonist, convert from clarinet 45 years ago and used to play quite well. I still do but the embouchure and tonguing is lagging behind yet. I have a 27 year old Noblet in great shape that I am using but it is heavy and resistant. Any brand recommendations around $2,000 would be good, no student clarinets. The local music store is selling the Jupiter new for $100 less than online and they are trust worthy.

I really like the 1100s, in terms of play-ability it is very close to the Buffet Festival and generally comes from the factory set up very well in my experience. I would not be worried about the build quality as the one I owned had fairly stiff keywork and great fit and finish, especially for a Chinese clarinet.

Personally I would get one online though, on certain auction sites you can get them under $700 for a demo model in mint condition, an absolute steal for what you get.

Personally I don't like Jupiter horns, the build quality doesn't seem that great. They often have issues of being out of tune. I tried some and I was not satisfied, but each one has its own thoughts. The resale value is near to nothing.

Since you don't want a Buffet I would get a pro Yamaha like YCL-650E (around 1,400 Euros new, I don't know how much $ is in the States) or a Yamaha Custom series (around 2,000 Euros new). Great building quality, nice tune and they hold their valute pretty well.

You did say, "around $2,000." I did have a friend many years ago who swore by her Jupiter flute, but I can't say that I've run across anyone who uses a Jupiter clarinet.

The Uebel Advantage easily plays as well as a Buffet R13. It also features much heavier silver plate on their keys and leather pads. The Advantage is currently listed on their site for $2,258.

Just my two cents.

Well I had a friend that worked at Jupiter! Not too bad! I tested a few horns for him. You won't go wrong.

Around the same price check out the Yamaha 650 which can be considered as a pro horn by many.

I'm not just saying this. I would strongly suggest doing a google search. Most players say this. So take your time and test them out. Maybe ask a really good online music store if they will send you both with the idea that you will send one back and be careful that the store doesn't charge you a restocking fee.

Lastly, give Tom Ridenour a call. You can get his number at the sight below. He also makes some really good horns. I'm not sure if these are in your price range. $1800 or so. Slightly higher than the Jupiter and Yamaha's. http://ridenourclarinetproducts.com
