 mellow cd suggestions?
Author: klim

Seems like most clarinet cds I have are high energy, bordering on frenetic and I'm looking for some mellow music to strike a balance. I do have "The Magic Clarinet of Aker Bilk" and am on the lookout for cds by Bobby Gordon, although most of his music seems to be on vinyl. Any suggestions of other clarinet artists that might fill the bill for mellow?

There is a Compact Disc recording that Pete Fountain did for the Ranwood Record Label in Sept 1994 called "Touch of Class" that features his mellow melodic clarinet renditions of a number of ballad standards against the backdrop of a string orchestra. Some critics missed the driving rhythm and jazz improvisation they were used to hearing from Fountain, but if you want straight lyricism and mellow tone, this is a hard to beat clarinet recording.

Hint: if you look on that famous Internet Web site you just might find a copy of "Touch of Class."

Some of the tunes he plays are La Vie En Rose, Autumn Leaves, April in Paris, C'Est Si Bon, Miss Lucy (from Paul Weston's Crescent City Suite), Mood Indigo, The Song from Moulin Rouge, Your Cheating Heart.

Thanks. Sounds like just what I'm looking for and I do admire Pete Fountain. I found a cd of "Touch of Class" on the world wide web.

Check out the Clarinet Institute. THey are a bunch of cool people here near Los Angeles that offer some fun with local players getting together and reading clarinet music. But they are also very unusual with having a ton of music you can buy for very little or get for free.

You can also get recordings. A lot of recordings. Again the people there are very nice.

Reginald Kell & His Quiet Music would fill the bill.

So would a number of Richard Stoltzman's effective crossover albums, such as "Begin Sweet World". Jimmy Giuffre, recommended already, is excellent, as is another jazz clarinetist, Tony Scott on his "Music for Zen Meditation and Other Joys" album.
