 Selmer 3 Mouthpiece

So. I went for the gusto and purchased a Selmer Signet 100 from You Know Which Site. It arrived today, complete with an old Buffet chamois cloth and a truly disgusting mouthpiece.

My question is about the mouthpiece, marked Selmer / ELKHART, INDIANA / 3. Is it a Goldentone, even though it's not marked as such? Plastic or hard rubber (and how would I tell the difference?)?

Is it worth trying to bring back from the dead, or is it a doorstop? Attached photos to show how discolored it is. (I've given it an initial soak-n-scrub with vinegar and Q-tips.)

Thanks --
Beth

(P.S. The clarinet seems much, *much* better than my mom's old Bundy. Better intonation and richer sound. I'm taking it in to my tech tomorrow for a good going over -- new corks and pads and some regulation work, too.)

Only hard rubber can have patina like this. Vinegar can hurt the material, you should use lemon juice instead. The blank itself is nothing special, but maybe a decent candidate for refacing. Don't expect it to turn into a gem, however.

Looks like an old hard rubber Goldentone, similar to one in my junkbox. They can play OK, but I've found then very inconsistent. There are much better mouthpieces available. It might reface into something decent.
