Just saw "The King's Speech" about king George VI of Britains stammering problems. The film makes extensive use of classical music, including the Mozart Clarinet Concerto, which also is played during the closing credits. Out of curiosity: Are there any other films notable for their use of clarinet music?

I don't know about "extensively", but I remember a couple of movies where end credits, opening credits, or main theme had clarinet featured:

Yes, there are clarinet solos in the film score for The Terminal, however, I was thinking of movies using classical clarinet works like, for example, the Mozart clarinet concerto.

Fun fact: According to iTunes, the soundtrack for "The King's Speech" does NOT include the Mozart Clarinet Concerto. I only find this odd because it is used so extensively in the film.
Does anyone have any idea about what orchestra is used on the soundtrack?

The old classic "Soylent Green" features the Kegelstatt trio - in the scene where they are eating the "deluxe" beef and stalk of celery!

Out of Africa, I think, also used the Mozart Concerto and maybe parts of the Quintet. And of course Amadeus used a lot of music - not surprisingly, mostly Mozart with some Salieri.

I think it is Andrew Marriner and the London Symphony (Beethoven 7) during the speech is especially moving.

And yes Out of Africa uses the 2nd ovement extensively. I think the clarinetist is David Shifrin.

Mostly heard of the Moz Conc. are the orchestra portions, rather than the soloist parts. Nontheless, the use of the music is effective, appropriate, and well done. Great movie!

I think 'Out of Africa' used one of jack Brymer's recordings. In one of his books (from where I sit) i think he mentions this.
Chocolate....with johnny Depp uses a lot of Clarinet (fairly sure he is not the soloist).

Not related to clarinet music, but The Fall (2006, released 2008) has an amazing slow-mo opening of a horse falling off of a bridge with the 2nd mvt from Beethoven's 5th.

Anyone else think that The King's Speech used the Beethoven 7 slow movement to absolute perfection?
As for its use of the Mozart Concerto, I kept wanting to hear the clarinet during the movie so I found it distracting!

Hi All:
Thanks for the mention mrn. It was fun working with Copland those many years ago.
I did a "Copland-like Concerto" for a Carter Birdwell HBO, made for TV, project years ago, "And the Band played On" with lots of solo Clarinet stuff & they actually issued the soundtrack as a separate CD!!
The original "Beauty and the Beast" Disney animation, done over 25 years ago, featues many Clarinet solos I did, also a fun project.
Many of Elmer Berstein scores for his movies in the 80's and 90's had prominent Clarinet solos that we carefully worked on.
The Cohn Bros. movies had some wild Clarinet stuff also, like "Fargo". And "Femme Fatale in 2002, begins like Bolero with woodwind solos, I think my big solo was the second one, then a few solos later, I played the very tricky Bass Clarinet solo!
The list goes on, but I won't bore you it. Suffice it to say, in the 25+ years of recording film scores here in NYC, many great composers wrote Clarinet solos which I was thrilled to do.

I just found it so bizarre in the King's Speech that they only used the orchestral sections of the Mozart - very distracting!
I wonder why they decided to use a clarinet concerto with no clarinet? And now it has won a BAFTA for best music.

The non-clarinet in King's Speech also was distracting for me, but I just wonder if this was another subtle way of pointing out that George's speech was a problem for him. He couldn't get words out...the score couldn't get to the clarinet part.

Not really clarinet related, but in The King's Speech near the end, the use of Beethoven’s Emperor Concerto was extremely well done. That piece was the prefect metaphor for the King addressing his subjects. Overall, the music added a lot more to this film than most, and knowing the music was a plus.

The LSO recorded the Mozart Concerto and other excerpts specifically for The King's Speech. You can hear a few bars of Andrew Marriner's solo under the credits, and there is a lot of editing of the Mozart involved. When it comes out on DVD you'll hear what they did.
What is nice is that Andrew and the solo pianist who played a lot of the original music were given credit on the end title "scroll".

I remember "Green Card" used the slow movt of the Mozart concerto. A lot of Rachel Portmans soundtracks (including Chocolat) seem to feature the clarinet. I also remember a lot of clarinet in "Schindlers List".

Just watched a nice movie on Amazon Prime with lots of great clarinet playing. Including what sounded like maybe a clarinet trio or quartet? It’s called “The Only Living Boy in New York”. Not sure who all are the clarinetists though.

An obscure, forgotten, albeit excellent French film: "Préparez vos Mouchoirs" (which I would translate as: "Get ready to Weep") uses the Mozart Clarinet Concerto and even mentions Jack Brymer in the dialogue!

The John Williams score to Tom Hanks movie The Terminal features a lot of clarinet. The closing music is a clarinet solo with the following sad story attached: Williams liked the playing of the clarinetist Emily Bernstein (in the orchestra recording the score) so much that he wrote a clarinet solo, Viktor's Tale, for the credit music. Bernstein was terminally ill at the time and passed away a couple of weeks after recording that music.
Viktor's Tale is now a fairly popular piece, often performed with band or orchestra accompaniment.

Not in the movies, but I thought I'd raise a related one: old radio dramas often had original music written for them. I like listening to old programmes from the BBC, and if you can get the BBC Sounds app to work (I'm not sure you can if you are outside the UK) there are lots to choose from. I'm currently listening to "Journey Into Space - The Red Planet", which is a slightly cheesy sci-fi series from the 1950s, with a brilliant spacey soundtrack that I think may have been played live during the recording of the play. The instrumentation is all winds, with clarinet much to the fore. I assume the players were either musicians employed by the BBC or session musicians. They certainly don't seem to have been considered worth a mention in the credits! The credits do say the music was composed and conducted by Van Phillips; he might be the same Oscar Van Phillips, an American composer who wrote film music and some TV eg Ren & Stimpy show. As I say it's excellent music in the mid-20th century idiom, which I'd listen to in its own right if I could. Highly recommended.
