Gig bag for BBb Leblanc Paperclip
Author: Mojo
Date:   2018-12-06 20:50

I searched through a bunch of microphone stand bag specs and landed on a Hercules stand bag ($35). It has a 6” width that has a zipper along the bottom that expands it to 8”. The top stays at 6” so it is a trapezoid shape. The length is 48”. I used 2 layers of 1” thick high density foam along the bottom and ends. One layer on the sides and top. You need an electric meat carving knife ($17) to easily cut the foam ($22). Mine is a low D Paperclip but I think it can work for a low C too. Not crush proof but more protection than other gig bags I have used on other instruments.

I have photos but they appear to be too large to upload.

Very clever idea!

Might want to have that register vent looked at though...

It is hissy sounding without the nylon.

It's most likely out of adjustment. The Leblanc register mechanism is very finicky, but once you get it adjusted right the instrument should play clearly without any hissing.

It might be, but hissing from octave or register vents sometimes happens even if they are adjusted correctly. The type of hiss and the way it is improved with the "net" over it is something you notice if you try it. It's hard to explain the exact change without actually hearing it, and not all hisses are improved this way.

One possible issue is that the net wrapped over the hole can leak. It is usually an extremely small leak that is at best hard to even notice when playing. The thorough repair is to wrap the net, glue it with epoxy on top of the hole rim, then create a new seat from the epoxy. This way the pad doesn't close over the net itself.

There are serial number lists for the Leblanc 340. They run from 1000 to 2530. These include low D and low C models. So this indicates 1531 of the BBb Paperclips were made.

I have tried the nylon off/on the pip and have not noticed a difference in response. There could still be a tiny leak with it on and I am blowing past it. I did not want to commit to a glue job with it yet.

I also tried aditional cork under the LH octave key lever so the octave key did not open as much. This made the hiss go away but also closed off the high Bb key too much. I’m mechanically inclined but do not see a way to adjust this so the Bb key opens wide enough while the octave key only opens a little. I think it is possible, but I can not see it.

Try installing a Hasty pad or voicing pin. This should significantly reduce the hiss and will also improve response a little bit.

I've tried that many times (and have seen it done by others too), using several shapes (I found that a flatter sheet like shape works better than a regular pointy round/cone shape). Sometimes it works, or at least helps, but in most cases it creates more problems than it solves i.e. for it to make an improvement worth having, it needs to have a size/shape such that it creates even larger compromises. So... yeah it's worth trying, but the net method is a different, equally valid method, that has a different effect, so depends on the exact issue.

>> I think it is possible, but I can not see it. <<

I can't remember the mechanism without having it in front of me, but in theory, it is basically reducing the travel for one linkage compared with the other. There are two ways to do it: create play in one, or change the relationship between the sides in one.

I assume you don't want to create unnecessary play. The latter method requires separate axial centers for the linkages. Here is a diagram that explains the idea using a linkage arm and adjustment screw example. Compare the second and third rows. You can see that once the linkage arm is curved at the end, the arm moves more in relation to how much the screw moves.

Thanks for the ideas. I read where Brad Behn suggested making a trial voicing pin out of a tooth pick. But I think he was using a cork pad with a hole drilled in it. I may try that and I will look at the linkages again to see if I can add play at the right spot so the octave key is lifted only during the last half of the thumb lever travel. Not high on my list since what I have now is working for me. I may even wait until I get an overhaul in the Spring.

The photo doesn't show for some reason. Trying again.

Hmm... seems to still not work. Is it just for me? I get a weird error page.

I have since seen several eBay 340 contras with 3 digit serial numbers.
