E&S A Clarinet

Hey guys,

I recently acquired an Evette & Schaeffer Bb clarinet with the "K" serial number (dated to 1964) for use as a backup instrument and am amazed with the sound I'm getting from it. Based on BB/internet research there is some debate over whether or not the K series was made with the R13 bore for a short time.

Regardless, I have become curious as to whether or not E&S made an A clarinet at this time period using similar methods, and if they did, will the letter in the serial number match between A and Bb? In other words, does "K" on an E&S A clarinet, if it exists, correspond to the same desirable time period?

They do exist, but they were almost always sold as part of a set. They are also quite hard to find. You may have to end up buying a set of clarinets to get the A clarinet you want. A better option might be to buy a pre 1950s Buffet A clarinet which will be around the same price but will be much easier to find. The serial numbers should correspond to the same series as the Bb serial numbers if you do end up finding an E&S.

I think you will find that the "K" prefix is not a date indicator but just identifies that the clarinet serial number belongs to the E&S sequence and not the Buffet serial sequence.
This tradition continued when these E&S models morphed into the Buffet E13 which again always has a "K" pre-fix whilst their Pro models are purely numeric.

Note this is quite diferent to the Selmer lists when the alpha prefix did indicate the period of manufacture.
