 R13 clarinet?
Author: WoodwindBen

I recently purchased what the store believed to be an R13 clarinet, with serial number 452376. However, there is a space between the two body pieces, a plastic screw in the A flat key, and the clarinet looks fairly newer than my teacher's R13 clarinet, which has a newer serial number in the 500,000s. The clarinet also appears to have nickel keys. The question is whether it is a R13 professional clarinet, or maybe a E11, E12, or E13 intermediate clarinet.

Don't the E series clarinets have the model stamped in the trademark area?

R13s were made in both nickle and silver plate.
The E13 series all have serial numbers prefixed with "K"
Don't know about current E11 and E12 but for most of the past E11s were made in Germany and so marked and used a totally different serial list.

Check for cut-outs in the wood under the RH pinky keys, that is a sign of an R13.

Put up a picture for better identification.

Yes Karl is right. The newer E11s and E12s have the models stamped near the Buffet logo on the upper joint. So they are probably not those.

If it's an R13, the Buffet logo will be stamped on each section and will have 'Made in France' directly beneath it. R13s don't have 'R13' stamped on the top joint but all other models from the last few decades will have the model number on the top joint. The cut-outs under the RH pinky keys are seen on pro level Buffets.

Post some photos of it so we can determine if it's an R13 or not.
