 John Yeh plays Weber

John Bruce Yeh performs an arrangement for clarinet and orchestra of the Weber Quintet. Strikingly beautiful sound on the Yamaha clarinet, with tonal and dynamic balance on even the widest intervals.

John Yeh plays on Yamaha CSVRs. To get that good of a sound, it takes a good instrument and, more importantly, extremely good skill

He plays with a double lip too! The Yamaha CSVR's are great horns. The upper register is much easier to play compared to Buffets, as you can hear in this piece.

Anyway, a great performance. I'm glad he recommended the horns to me! Thanks John!

Second that his wonderful sound has little to do with the equipment. However, the clarinet used in this performance seems to be the SE-Artist model with the diamond shaped emblem on the upper joint, gold(ish) rings on the barrel, and the low E/F correction mechanism. I don't think the artist model is available in US yet.

He's using the CSVR's at the moment. With a RD5 mouthpiece. As far as I know. As of about 2 months ago.

To clear up any confusion, I emailed John Yeh and he kindly replied that in this performance of the Weber Quintet "I used a Yamaha SEV-KF model, I believe this is what they call the Artist Model these days. The KF model was very colorful and light for Solo and chamber music purposes. I loved it when I first tried it. I believe [the] CSVR clarinets have a slightly deeper and more stable sound, able to project well [in the] orchestra."

The Yamaha SEV-KF model was never available in the US. It was designed in collaboration with Japanese clarinetist Kazuo Fujii. Before Yeh switched to the Yamaha CSVR, the SEV-KF was his main clarinet.

Not to mention that he was using the Silverstein Cryo 4 ligature... :-)
