Author: BassetHorn

Hello, has anyone read Jean Marc Volta's Bass Clarinet book? What do you think of it? Is it a good addition to a serious bass clarinetist's library? Thanks. Willy

They have it here for $45. I don't know how good it is, but the table of contents looks pretty comprehensive.

Does anyone know another store other than Van Cott that stocks this book?

Before Van Cott stocked it, I purchased it from a Vandoren store in Paris and had it shipped. It's a very informative book as far as bass clarinet information and exercises go. Sometimes the translations between French and English are funny (as in haha). It also has a wonderful and extensive fingering chart with many high note fingerings.

Email I received from Jean Marc Volta:

"You can buy my bass-clarinet book by Vandoren-Paris (or by ×™ditions IMD, rue Lamarck in Paris 75018)"

Looked on Vandoren website, they have something by Volta but not this book. I emailed them about it, no answer yet (after only one day). I think the second store Volta mentions is the store buedsma wrote about above.

Buedsma, can you please give me the phone number of this store or a way to get it (for example their website)? You can email me to the address in my profile.
I tried emailing you to the address on your website but for some reason it didn't work (I received a mail failure message).

Thanks.

The book assumes you can play the clarinet/bass clarinet very well.

It concentrates on the typical bassclarinet problems , that are nearly all related to airstream , embouchure and control of the airstream from your belly till the end of the horn.

First book that i encounter with so much emphasis on those topics .
And all the small details are true and deserve execise and more conscious attention.

Translation from french to english is , to say the least , disappointing and a shame for every publisher. Doesn't stop you from understanding nearly everything though.
For fingering techniques and studies you'll have to look somewhere else.

CHeck also the Henri bok book ( with cd containing all the techniques available )

 Alternate fingerings
Author: clived
Date:   2017-11-08 18:12

Hi everyone,
Does anyone know of an alternative fingering for C above the (treble) staff suitable for bass clarinet when playing without a floor peg, ie when it is difficult to hold the instrument steady?
I imagine this situation applies more to jazz players who are perhaps more likely than orchestral players to play standing.

Many thanks,
Clive.
