Trumpet slide grease for clarinet cork ?
Author: gerardo1000

Sorry for the naive question, I am a beginner. Can I use trumpet slide grease (the one that is sold in small jars) to lubricate my clarinet corks ? I have a couple of jars left from the times when I attempted to play trumpet. Or should I stick with the regular cork grease tube ? Thanks !

So long as it doesn't contain petroleum jelly or other petroleum based ingredients, it should be fine.

La Tromba cork grease can be used on tuning slides - it used to say 'Slide and cork grease' on the tubs, now it only says 'cork grease'.

The one I have is SCHILKE slide grease with lanolin. I have no idea if it contains petroleum based ingredients, so I will not use it for the corks of my clarinet.
Tank you for your advise !

Lanolin is a byproduct of the wool industry, so that will be fine for use on cork. Check the ingredients to be sure it hasn't been mixed with any petroleum derived products.

Unfortunately there is no mention of the ingredients in the jar's label

Contact Schilke and ask them what their grease is made from or where they source it from.

Hi, I also had the same question couple of years ago. But, I kept using Jupiter slide grease on my clarinet corks and it works fine. Much easier to apply, though bit jel-like, don't see much of residues left to clean after practice.

I had been using Vandoren cork grease for awhile and had to replace the center tenon cork as well as the cork on the neck. After seeing Chris P's comments about La Tromba, I used the small "tub" that came with my horn. (I don't know why I didn't try it in the first place). GREAT cork grease. Have since ordered more.
