Dear BBoard,
I'm preparing for college auditions and have come up with a list of about 5 schools that I am looking at. I was hoping to get some more outside opinions about the undergraduate studios of these schools. I'm looking to double major in performance and education:
Northwestern University
DePaul University
Michigan State University
Colorado State University
Arizona State University (I live in-state for ASU)

The "fit" you get for a school will depend on your preferences for student population, geographic location, and financial aid.
However, for music school, I would say almost everything else is secondary to establishing a great rapport with your future private instructor, and knowing that they believe in you and will help you plan a strategy to learn the necessary skills to start a career once you graduate (or help you network and move to the next step if graduate study is necessary).
I've had students in the past make a big deal out of attending a "name" school without really thinking about how their private lessons would work out. Some were accepted simply because they could pay full tuition (out-of-state especially) and were assigned to a graduate student for instruction instead of the actual professor(s).

In agreement with Gwie: go take a lesson with as many of these professors as you can between now and November.
Also: what are your career goals?

So many factors involved. I'm in agreement with all that's said about but you need to consider your other double major because that's probably what you will make your living at. When I taught at Peabody, up until about 7 years ago, part of the Johns Hopkins University, I usually had at least one double major. Those that I've kept in touch with all make their living from their other majors. Some still play locally where they live and at least kept up their playing. One of mine works for CNN and often appears on specials, and she's gives chamber music concerts on occasion. My point being, you need to really consider your other major. I know to be accepted as a double major at Peabody-Hopkins you have to be accepted at both schools for each major and Peabody required you to get one of the top auditions ratings knowing how difficult it is to do both well. When I taught at Towson University it was easier to double major because you only had to be accepted into the university on one major and than take the necessary courses and declare a double major. Check out the requirements for each school your interested in.
