 Martin Freres Lamonte

I understand there is a Martin Freres Lamonte Model 1 and Model 2.

The Model 1 was supposedly made 1940-50, and I have read that it is a pretty good quality clarinet compared to the Model 2 which was made later.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, GeorgeG

You may have seen this:

Somebody bought the name, but they have some info on their site:

Thanks! I have seen these sites and was trying to see if anyone knew more about the Model 1. I bought one in great shape for $31.00 and am really impressed with its quality.

I will eventually get it overhauled and see how it plays.

Cheers, George

In the market for an E-flat clarinet last year, a trusted dealer recommended an vintage Martin Freres Model 1Eb to me. With some trepidation, I bought the instrument. They carefully overhauled it to my specifications.

As it turns out, it's an absolutely delightful clarinet with beautiful tone, even response, nice build quality, good ergonomics, and impeccable tuning. What's not to like?

While the LaMonte was the entry-level model, it wouldn't surprise me if it turned out to be a keeper.

The main fault I see with some vintage Martin Freres clarinets is pitted, porous and/or flaking nickel plating. This is a problem that affected many builders when bright nickel-plated keywork replaced traditional solid Maillechort keys industry-wide in the 1950s. It's easy enough to find Martin Freres instruments with good plating.

Thanks. I saw some ads on the Model 2 that said the keyword is German Silver. That definitely appears to be the same on my Model 1.

The wood quality and heavy key construction in addition to it being made in the 1940’s makes me think this may be a quality instrument. I’ll find out soon once it is overhauled.

Appreciate your input.

Cheers, George

New member here - Stephen Clayton - although I've enjoyed visiting here for information. I just bought a Martin Frères Lamonte Model 1, S/N S7660L. I have the original sales card that came with the new instrument. It's from "Buegeleisen & Jacobson, Inc., 3-7-9 Union Square, New York 3, N. Y." and it was sold by Buell Music Company on September 9, 1954.

Of course, the sales date may not directly correspond to the manufacture date, but since I realize finding year dates by serial number is difficult, this may be a good starting reference. In any case, it gives me great pleasure to share this information with other MF owners!
