Bummer
Of my 1401 pieces of printed music, 37 are Himie Voxman arrangements or edits. That's 2.6%.
A marvelous contribution; I wonder what he's done that I don't have a copy of.

David, thanks for letting us know. I recall reading in the Instrumentalist magazine a couple years ago that he was still performing, in his late 90s, in a community band. Like Bob Phillips, I also have a number of his arrangements or edits.
An amazing life, and an amazing man.

I studied out of the Advanced Method, was judged by him in a 1957 WSMA State Music Festival (he gave me a 1st Div rating), his grandson played clarinet in my middle school band and Himie came to Madison to hear him play in my retirement concert in 1999. He was so much a part of my musical life and I am so sorry to hear of his passing. A kind, gentle giant of our clarinet community who will be missed by all.

Hi,
For those that knew the name but did not know the man, his obituary was a marvelous tribute to this giant. While I never met Himie Voxman, I know several individuals who took lessons from him, as recently as a few years ago. What a teacher he must have been!
I really liked the part where Voxman said something about a jr. high clarinet teacher "who's name he could not remember..." was one of his major influences (or words to that effect).
It might be a nice tribute to a great teacher like Voxman for each of us to take a few moments to remember our own teachers (clarinet and otherwise). These individuals - many who's name are now forgotten- had a tremendous effect on who and what we are today.
So I'm thinking about Bob M., Ed A., Byron A., Sam S., Dick S., Karl W., Bill B., Dave M., Bob R., Fred C., Sally C., Lou M., Ed. M., and even Martha T. I remember them all! Fondly and with great respect.

In remembrance of the great Himie Voxman, I would like to recall three of my former clarinet teachers: Benny Ehr, at Ward Brodt Music; William Dominik, my first college clarinet teacher and Russel Dagon, my graduate clarinet teacher. Benny inspired me to develop technique, Mr Dominik taught me legato fingering and refined my embouchure and Russ was a simply a role model for musical excellence.
One of my most memorable student comments occurred while I was interviewing my beginning band students in the fall of 1997. After a short talk, little Jimmy spoke up with, "My grandfather has a music building named after him." That's right, "little" Jimmy Voxman. I *astutely* allowed him to play the instrument of his choice--the clarinet.

Not bad for an electrical engineer. To be paid tribute on a clarinet bulletin board.
I bet all of us have used a Voxman edition at one time or another.
