My favorite is by Ulysse Delecluse on an ancient 10" LP issued by Selmer. He was the head of the clarinet faculty at the Paris Conservatoire. He had a tone like tearing sheet metal, but his technique and musicianship were amazing.

Maurice Gabai is (was?) a remarkable technician, who tossed off the Francaix Concerto as if it was a C major scale.

Salzo - do you know whether the Gabai Saint-Saens is available anywhere? Amazon shows it as out of print.

Ken-
I have the Delecluse recording- I like it also.
I think I got my copy of the Gabai at Arkivmusic.com.
I have an extra copy-if they no longer have it, I would be glad to send it to you.
He plays with too much vibrato for my taste-but I really like his phrasing, and his 3rd movement is quite beautiful.
Have you hear his recording of the Milhaud Concerto-it is very good.

Ken-
Have you heard the recording with Delecluse playing the Beethoven Septet?
That has to be my favorite Septet recording.

Reg Kell made a very fine version of this sonata which in my view slightly pipped that by dePeyer.

Salzo -

Yes, I have Delecluse's Septet. I haven't listened to it for a long time, though. I also have his Brahms Quintet, which I have never gotten around to playing, and his Milhaud Trio, which is great.

Norman -

I like Kell's Saint-Saens, but I think his tone and laid-back style don't bring out the humor and brilliance that Delecluse finds. I have the de Peyer recording, which I haven't listened to for ages. If it was made before he quit practicing (as in some of his later recordings with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center), it should be excellent.

By the way, everyone should hear de Peyer's Shepherd on the Rock with Beverly Sills and Charles Wadsworth. Sills's voice is badly worn, but her breath control and musicality are all there. GdP is superb, and musically I think it outclasses even Valente/Wright/Serkin and Schumann/Kell/Reeves.
