Laura Ardan's new album is featured this week in iTunes Classical

http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/clarinet-ensemble-music-piazzolla/id338263324

Has a bunch of players on it including Ricardo Morales. It came out a few months ago, but iTunes has finally listed it in their Classical Genre Featured new recordings.

WOW--our local composer, John Harbison, is in some great company with the other composers listed here. Once, every year, he sponsers a week long series of concerts--the Token Creek Music Festival--in the barn on his suburban farm which is well attended. I'll have to head down to the Exclusive Company and pick up this album. Thanks for posting........

You mean the other composers are in some great company with John Harbison :) He and his yearly series are pretty well known!

I've been listening to this recording for a few weeks now - found it on Classics Online, which has the advantage of allowing the purchaser to download the cover art and the complete CD booklet when you buy the album. Occasionally the Classics Online price is lower than iTunes as well.

I found the designation "Laura Ardan's new album" curious. There are a bunch of heavy hitters on this recording - Ricardo, Timothy Paradise (St. Paul CO), Evan Ziporyn (Bang on a Can, "This Is Not a Clarinet"), James Ognibene - all pretty evenly distributed over the recording. And it is definitely a good program and playing worth hearing IMHO.

The composers are no slouches either!

I love this CD! I wish they had been more informative about who is playing what on each track. I'm especially impressed by the Eb clarinet playing on the Piazzola -- anybody know which one of the "heavy hitters" this is?

Since I have access to the Naxos listening library, I have been able to listen to this recording as well as view the liner notes. The players listed as playing on the Piazzola are:

Ricardo Morales: clar 1
Laura Ardan: clar 2
James Ognibene: basset horn
Ted Schoen: bass clar

I also feel the need to speak up for Ted Schoen. While this is definitely an ensemble project, according to the liner notes Schoen received the University of Minnesota MicKnight Presidential Fellow Award in 2005 to partially fund the project. He smartly enlisted his friends Laura Ardan and Ricardo Morales plus the other great players to make an outstanding CD!

Bravo, Ted!

If anyone is interested in who's playing on the other tracks, go to the following adress:

http://www.naxos.com/catalogue/item.asp?item_code=8.572264

To the left of each title is a button with a + sign. Click on this button and the players' identities will appear.

Best regards,
jnk
