This subject has been discussed frequently on this message board. In fact, there was a recent thread on it. I suggest that do a search on "bore oil" and you will find more than you ever wanted to know.

IMHO--forget it. Just swab your clarinet after each use and don't forget to clean the tendon sleeves as well. Use a "hankerchief" swab--they do the best job.

William,

Don't know where you live, but I believe it to be a necessity in our region (Coastal I Plains of Texas). It also depends on the condition of the wood. Older clarinets (vintage) get linear cracks in the bore if they are not attended to regularly. I know from firsthand experience. I've restored many older instruments that have such problems. A good thorough soaking in almond or apricot oil does wonders to rejuvinate these older instruments. Agree/Disagree, that is your option, but I hold firm in my belief.

No guys and gals I won't do it. Just returned from surgery tonight and the mind is willing but the body is not up to it. Amanda, as Don suggested, go back just a little and check the recent treads on bore oil - there all your questions will probably be addressed. Some are avid proponents of using oil - others are not. I would suggest that you form your own opinion based on evidence rather than on heresay and rank opionions.

Suggest you follow Omars wise words. At least his opinion is based on a lot of scientific research. Some people say some very silly things on this topic.

Aren't you only supposed to use bore oil on new wooden clarinets for the first 6 months or so, so they don't crack? That's what I reckon. Otherwise it cloggs up the inside. I agree with William. Maybe I'm saying silly things eh Gordon?

Researching Brymer's "Clarinet" book, for the string-down-the-bore thing [on Early Clarionet [my typo!] }, I saw his discussion of the pro's and con's of bore oiling, well worth reading!. Don
