 I need a bag...
Author: columbus

I am in dire need of a nice clarinet bag that will hold my clarinet in its case (stock 80's R-13 case) , my music books, and some small other things (metronome, tuner). I was wondering if there are any recommended brands or styles I should look at. I'd like something like a messenger bag, but not too big.

Measure the outside dimensions of your case (or bring it with you) and then take a trip to Office Depot or Staples to see their selection of computer carrying bags.

For example:

Columbus,

GBK is right on here (as usual). Computer cases or a canvas briefcase is exactly what you need to the older R13 case. Lots of extra pockets but be on the lookout of a side opening pocket that is big enough for a music folder. I have an old Lands End Square Rigger canvas briefcase that is perfect and has two large interior pockets and it is waterproof as well.

I've gone to a lot of professional meetings where they give you a briefcase. These work great as well. Too bad you are not closer as I've got a couple I'd give you.

Also, there is always Altieri--here's the link:

Oh, geeze, Hank you got one of them too. I bet you use your old Navy duffle bag for your sax....

It's being resourceful vs. having an "official" instrument bag. the principle is the same: a case to protect your case and instrument with added features of extra pockets and so forth. whatever works best in protection is all that matters.

Our inventions are wont to be pretty toys, which distract our attention from serious things. they are but improved means to an unimproved end, an end which was already but too easy to arrive as railroads lead to Boston to New York

I have used the Lands End canvas briefcases as well for many years. I have gone through a few of them. They hold up like iron, have tons of room for accessories and work very well.

I'd check out the offerings from REI (wwww.rei.com). Although they are more famous for their camping gear, they have excellent bags.

I (and a number of my students with single instrument cases) use the "Transit" bag (for me it carries lots of scores and my baton cases really well, along with a tuner, various books, accessories, water bottle, writing implements, etc.).

Draz,

Army duffel bag; you're the one with the Navy duffel bag (I saw it in the sub-basement right next to one of the drum sets).

As GBK stated, I long ago went to Staples and now have a wegner computer case that fits my single clarinet case.

I DO have an altieri bag that holds my set of opuses (opi I guess), but main reason is because it came with the clarinets when I bought them. It works very well, but the computer case holds a lot more and has divisions to keep things separated easier.
