 Ligature: what a difference!
Author: timg

I have just replaced my standard Buffet ligature with a Rovner MKIII, and Wow! what a difference it makes.

I'm only a beginner of 3 months, so I'm not talking about subtle changes in tone: the new ligature really makes the instrument easier to play. Notes are much more consistent and resonate more freely. It's easier to find the right air pressure, and crossing the break is less of an ordeal.

Please excuse my enthusiasm, I really wasn't expecting to find much difference at all. I only bought the new ligature because the old metal one was fiddly to adjust and sometimes allowed the reed to slip.

Now I'm wondering if another ligature would be even better! Of course equipment doesn't make up for skill: an experienced player will make a good sound with any old setup. But I'm curious to know what other people have found.

Keep the Mark III, it served Ricardo Morales (Principal Phila. Orch and to me the best Clarinetist alive currently) well for several years.

There are other Ligatures out there which to me are much better, but what should be the complete focus is practicing and doing the work to get better, not upgrading equipment.

I use the Vandoren Opitmum and previously used the BG Super revelation and Silver.

Rovner MKIII is a great ligature. My favorite ligatures are rovner. I have three that I rotate through.

Yes, Rovner will serve you well........however, just for the sake of argument, I have had the best luck with the Vandoren Leather. The Vandoren takes Rovner's original idea of the leather (or some such material) and incorporates the option for a metal plate styled like the Bonade (two rails running pretty much the length of the reed's stock). This ligature gives me, as you state, an even tone, a much larger sound and no edginess.

The latest one I added to my collection was the Vandoren Leather for Eb. Though I hoped for an improvement in sound I got far more than I had even hoped........a world of improvement!!!

Why do people here not like edginess? There was here in Iceland a masterclass few years ago were we got to try the Leblanc OpusII clarinet and one of the best professional clarinetist said to me "Oh the tone is too smooth it lacks the roughness" and then came another professional clarinetist and replyed "You just want the typical Icelandic clarinet sound".

Dear Iceland,

I guess I need to qualify a statement like that. I guess that I mean that with my set up I get more than enough overtones with the Vandoren Leather ligature, and project like gangbusters. Other ligatures offer too much "color" for my set up.

If you take all the overtones out a a clarinet sound, it won't project or have any "sweetnes" to it at any appreciable distance.

Thank you for forcing me to clarify.

A great player can sound smooth when needed and rough when called for. Having a large palate of color comes in handy.
