I am looking for a good ligature. It seems that the Vandoren Optimum is one of choice. I am an intermediate player just getting back into playing again. Any suggestions?

Hello Skip,
I personally prefer the Peter Spriggs ($90ish) floating rail ligature to the Vandoren. It is, however, just a very advanced design of the Bonade ($20ish) inverted lig. that I have all my students use. (I am not diminishing the work and design that Spriggs did to create his lig...just offering a simplification).
Unfortunately the Bonade is poorly produced, and you have to do some work on it to get it to "be all that it can be".
I met a colleague this past week who uses the Spriggs who was trying the Luyben lig, and said it was wonderfull! And only about $10.00.
You can often order lig's on approval, and if you can that is what you should do.

Luyben is my choice too for cane reeds. Also inexpensive. Contact me for a really inexpensive, but excellent one, especially for plastic reeds,such as Legere. It's made of Velcro. I make,( an exaggeration because two cuts with a scissors and it is ready to use), them for friends, many of whom use them exclusively.

Good Morning Skip. I have an Optimum ligature that I bought about three months ago and I'm very happy with it. It has three, interchangeable plates for different playing needs. I'm not a good player and the ligature helped me a lot. You have to experiment with the plates to find out which one is the one that works best for you. Carlos

Do a search on this Bboard, there are heaps of topics about ligatures discussed in the past. I use a BG revelation, I liked it more than the Super Revelation but I really like the Bay silver ligatures ...

Like the Optimum, the Vandoren Leather has three interchangable "plates" (two are made of different types of leather, the third is metal). This ligature some how manages to provide a wide dynamic range and flexibility of sound that the Optimum does not have - both can really hold a reed down flat.

Personally I love the Rovner EDII ligature and don't like for the vandoren optimum. But many players will give you a different answer to this question, because many players are differtent.
I feel that the difference of a ligature is only noticeable by the player and still don't believe that the audience hears that many difference in sound. Just play a ligature that just feels good and doesn't cost a fortune....

Luyben is my choice. They hold the reed firmly in place, easy to adjust and cost very little. Also in various colours so nice to use on different clarinets such as Bb and A.
Also tried BG standard for a long time (BG revelation for a bit less) - they sound OK to me and look cool but the reed is always slipping about when applied and always when removing mouthpiece. Absolute pain if changing reed quickly or in poor light. I agree with OpusII and don't think there is much if any difference in the sound.

I highly recommend the Peter Spriggs Floating Rail lig. I LOOOVE it! It really seemed to open up my sound and make quick articulation a little easier.

It kind of depends on your mouthpiece setup. A ligature that works for me may not work for you. Take all the suggestions you see here and try them with your personal mouthpiece.
I've been using a Bonde inverted ligature for two years with no issues, and I much prefer it to the Optimum I was using when I last changed my setup.

I also like very much the Vandoren Masters ligature. I've tried too many ligatures including almost all of those mentioned in this thread (I think all except the Rovner) and I like the Vandoren Masters or the Oleg ligature, which on eBay is much cheaper (less than $30 when I got mine) than from a store.

i have a vadoren optimum that i used until i was looking for a "cheap" lig for my neice. ordered 2 different brands and i took the one she didnt want. i ended up with the Luyben and prefer it over the vandoren.

I recently bought a Vandoren leather ligature (LC21P), and I really like it - it has the 3 interchangeable plates (2 leather, 1 metal). It was about $40 through wwbw.com.

I fell in love with the BG super revalation.
The response and projection of a metal ligature with the covered silky sound of a leather. Best of both worlds, or somewhere in between =)
The Vandoren leather ligature with the light brown insert is really nice...
personally I really don't like the optimum, although it is probably the most conveniant and well designed.
I have also tried Bay ligatures, Bonade (inverted and normal), Vandoren Masters, Eddie Daniels II, Rovner standard, Bob Scott and (>_<) Luyben.
