Hi,
I'm wondering what music schools/colleges/conservatories (post-secondary) in the New York City area that do not require SAT scores you would suggest. I'm looking for schools that are more focused on performance, have a close knit musical community, support new music, open to different musical styles (jazz, international), strong chamber music program, and of course dedicated private instructors.
Are there theory requirements? And is there piano proficiency requirements?
I do not live in the United States.
Also, what is a reasonable number of schools to apply and audition for?

If you are interested in a bachelor's degree, you need to have taken the SAT to attend any of the schools in NY (Juilliard, Manhattan School of Music and Mannes School of Music to name the most prestigious in that city). I would recommend that you go that route actually, as a Bachelor of Arts in Music or a Bachelor of Music is useful in other aspects. If you care to acquire a degree in something else later in life for example, a conservatory diploma or a performer's certificate is worthless, and not much less expensive than acquiring a Bachelor's. Also, typically the academic work required to obtain a Bachelor's degree at one of those schools is usually not much more than that for a diploma. If you need time to work on the academic areas before taking the exam, you can usually enroll in a music diploma program, take the test once you're already a student, and later begin the Bachelor's degree core curriculum. International students at the school I attended, the Boston Conservatory, often went this route.

Actually, Juilliard does not require the SAT. They simply request that you have proof of high school graduation, or a G.E.D.

If you go to their websites and do a small amount of digging you will find the requirements for admission. Some schools are not specific, but others will say whether they want SAT scores or not for example. You can also call the admissions office, and ask about theory and piano proficiency requirements. Any questions I have not been able to answer myself through the website have been answered by the admissions personel.

If you're really interested in jazz and new music, I would seriously consider Berklee if I were you...I don't think Juilliard would be quite up your alley. It's in Boston, but it's the best school for your type of playing, it seems. If you are insistent upon being in NYC, then perhaps the Mannes College of Music division of the New School would be worth checking out...
And there are always theory and piano requirements.

Every conservatory will have a theory and piano proficiency requirement for graduation. It's helpful though not essential to have some knowledge of both when you enter.
If you want to be a performer, particularly in jazz, a thorough understanding of theory is essential. Hearing the chords is the foundation of jazz performance. Piano proficiency helps your harmonic sense because it gives you the physical feel of the chords. Playing at least a little piano is one of the things that's expected of a professional musician.

I don't want to be a jazz musician. I just am interested in jazz and different kinds of music.
Schools in Canada usually require you to be able to play certain chord progressions and scales on piano upon admission and have RCM theory at a certain grade. The requirements aren't as clear to me for the American schools since it does not appear to have grades for music. I can't find anything on the websites about having to play piano before entering or how much theory to know.
Since the SAT is during May and the auditions are during Feb/March-ish I don't know if I can apply to schools requiring SAT.
