 Resting position

How do you rest your instrument (long rests or Bb and A clarinets) when you are performing? (orchestral setting, ensemble...) I'm very detail oriented. :)

I did meet a clarinetist the other day who, when switching in concert from Bb to A, would play one clarinet and keep the other clarinet snug vertically between his knees. He stated that otherwise his clarinet would go immediately flat. That was new to me!

I'm not writing to give an answer but to add another aspect to the question:

And what if you use a neck strap? (Which would need to be unhooked in order to rest the instrument on your knee or lap.)

All context dependent, as usual.

In a cold environment, you might tuck the other instrument under your jacket and play the other with it there, if you have a crucial entry after the change.

And you might use a short barrel and pull out (or switch) after a bit.

On the other hand, if it's very hot, you might advantageously leave the other instrument on the peg until the last minute. And you might pull out the middle joint...

If you use a neck strap, you could do without it for a bit...come on...

You do what works, is the bottom line.

You can work out what works, no? (If you can't, you shouldn't be doing the job.)

When I was in Triangle Youth Symphony and I had to use the Bflat and A clarinet I had a stand with me when we performed, just because I didn't trust myself with the other instrument in my lap while playing the other because if it fell I would be REALLY mad.

I jump back and forth between bass and alto cls, and sometimes play our #2's bass [with my mp] so have lots of juggling, usually with a horn across my lap [or under my chair], and play with at least a neck strap, and with peg also on my bass, so do have problems, but stagger along. Luck, Don

Thanx, Mark, Don

I've gotten in the habit of holding it straight up with the bell resting on my leg.

In my orchestra, my section mate and I both usually hold it this way. Looks real snazzy and professional. Now if we could just play that way...

For short rests with a neckstrap, resting on the knee works just fine. Long rests get the peg.

For relatively short rests, I just relax my arms my arms, holding the clarinet lower but still vertical.

Since I do not use a neck strap, the instrument goes across my lap for longer rests. If we're really crowded together where it's not worth the risk of hitting the flute next to me, then I just hold it vertically. (Of course this only applies to nice flute players. <g>)

I have seen players who use neck straps usually keep the instrument attached and hold it either vertical or diagonally across their body, whichever way allows them to relax their arms.

Unless the director requires the section to use a uniform rest position, I'd recommend doing whatever is comfortable to give your arms "rest".
