I've been acquiring a few old Vandoren A2 and A3 crystal mpcs. (a nice A2 from Mark W.) and I thought I would post two images of the inserts that came inside the old purple boxes of Vandoren reeds. I'm sure many of you will have seen these, but perhaps others have not. Vintage 70s stuff.

Bill - Since you are getting no helpful posts, I'll try. I am quite unacquainted with VanDoren glass mps, my oldies were made by O'Brien, I have a Selmer Clarion, and 2 "middle-aged" GG [Italy] bass cl glasses #1 and #3 facings before refacing, and a recent Alto cl Pomarico #3 Mellow facing. O'Brien made theirs with facing #'s 1-5, some with an S [for short, I believe]. Poms, before their "gem names" were [I believe] #'d 1-3. There may have been several glass mp mfgrs during periods from the 1930's to the present, but the co-incidence of 1-3 facings indicates to me that 1 or possibly 2 makers were competing for a small market for the past century. My primary mouthpieces are a pair of Vandoren crystals. (I also have 2 back-up ones.) These were tediously selected from more than two dozen that I tried in the early 70's. They have served me very well over the past 30+ years.
Like most clarinetists, I own (and at one time, played) many mouthpieces by all the big names: Kaspar, Chedeville, Borbeck, Greg Smith, Fobes, Pomarico, etc... but always gravitate back to the same pair of Vandoren crystals.
The blanks were probably made by Pomarico, but the facings were unique to Vandoren and do not match any of the older Pomarico facings.
Although crystal mouthpieces can range from fabulous to awful (probably due to a lack of control in the final cooling/finishing of the raw material), if you are lucky enough to find a "live one", it is a joy to play.
Like all mouthpieces, but particularly crystal, the fragility issue is a concern.
Have a similar back-up mouthpiece, just in case...GBK

Just a fabulous bygone image from Vandoren - what they used to insert into their little purple plastic reed cases to advertise their (now discontinued) "cristal" mouthpieces.
I have an old Selmer HS** glass mpc. I love, and I have just won on eBay a Selmer glass mpc. marked "Honi," which I interpret as "H one." We'll see what I get (when it arrives)!

Well, that second picture's interesting! Looks like Vandoren used to do mouthpieces with shorter lay than the 5RV, and that the B45 used to count as a 'long' lay. I wonder what happened to all these discontinued lines?
