 Finding a practice space
Author: flutist319

I graduated from college this past year, and now I'm in a new city for grad school. One of my friends from my old university band has moved to the same city, but she's no longer in school. She wants to keep playing her clarinet for fun, but she tells me that her landlady said that she can't practise in her apartment. So my friend asked me if people unaffiliated with my school can use the practice rooms on our campus. The answer is definitely no: every practice room here is locked and you need a student ID to get in. I want to give her more help than just saying "well, unfortunately not"…does anyone have any advice about what they would do (or have done) in her situation?

Can't practice in her apartment at all? Did this happen due to an incident, or did she ask "can I practice in my apartment"? There are some things that you shouldn't (and shouldn't need to) ask permission for. Just keep it between 10am and 9pm and you should be fine.

Look around for any buildings you come across in day-to-day life and see if you can practice there. I used to practice after-hours in my office building. The boss didn't mind... he actually thought it was cool, and he appreciated the opportunity to encourage my other interests.

Living in an apartment, and practicing clarinet and piano, there are certain noise rules, which here it's between 9:00 (or 10:00 am) to 10:00 pm. Actually in two of the three buildings I have lived in in my adult life, we had people saying they enjoyed listening to us play, and were glad to finally learn who it was. In the second building I lived in, there were several musicians overall, and at least 3 apartments that had at least one musician on our floor. Usually my husband and I practice between 1 and 5 pm, when most people are at work anyway. Tenant's acts nowadays (at least where I am) seem to benefit tenants more than landlords.

Heck, hearing music played well by musicians is a lot better than some people whose dogs bark constantly, or people who blast their TV or stereo really loud.

Is there perhaps a community music school that you can use a practice room? When I didn't want to practice at home (especially when my parents were home a lot because of vacation) I went to a music school in the downtown area that rented rooms for $1 an hour.

What about unused classrooms on campus during the evening and on weekends?

She could try contacting the music minister at a local church. If the church is community-minded and if the minister could use a good clarinetist for future events, I think it could be a very plausible arrangement.

There have been good threads on this, which you'll find by searching on PRACTICE ROOM. Here are a few:

If all else fails, go into a full closet and close the door. http://test.woodwind.org/clarinet/BBoard/read.html?f=1&i=340358&t=340338

Way back when, I used to practice my clarinet without a reed, because my little brothers had to go to bed early in the evening. It leaves something to be desired, but you can actually get a sense of your music and practice fingerings this way.

Who knows -- reedless clarinet playing may actually be some sort of "extended technique". I heard a collegiate group a few years ago play a piece that required the flutist and clarinetist to simply finger their instruments with a "pop" on each key. It was amazing how well that sound projected.

I've practiced outside often. Still do every now and then. It's fun and you get a sense of "calm" when practicing outside on a nice day. Typically, the more crowded it is, the less I focus on "long tones". no sense in TORTURING passers-by.

my guess is his/her friend just rent a single room from some person's apartment.. which means that she doesn't have that much freedom of choice.

i did this before but.. i was fortunate enough to be able to practice.

My first clarinet squeaked, couldn't get a sound out of it. My dad strongly suggested going in the woods and play. I did... Any wooded areas near you?
