Is anyone familiar with Mozart’s 3 clarinet quartets with violin, viola, and cello?
I recently bought a recording, and learned about their origin. Supposedly they were not Mozart’s original composition but alternate instrumentations of his violin sonatas and trio, and were published under his name. The music was wonderful, but the mystery lies in who created this alternate instrumentation; was it Mozart’s hand or someone else’s?

amazon.co.uk seems to have nothing for mozart clarinet quartet.

David, here are further details:
It's published by the label K617. A French recording.
Premier recording on original instruments. Bb for the first 2 quartets and C for the K496.
Jean Claude Veilhan is the clarinetist, with the string players Trio Stadler.
According to the liner notes, these quartets were published as opus 79, and are alternate instrumentations of Mozart's:
Violin Sonata K378/317b
Violin Sonata K380/374f
Piano Trio K496

Yes.
I bought it at Early Music Vancouver's Annual CD sale last week. Also bought a recording of Thea King's Mozart clarinet concerto and quintet on basset clarinet; a 25 years anniversary reissue.
But regretted that I did not buy Krommer's Octets for Winds and Frank Zappa for Winds.

Many of mozart's works were transcribed for other instruments and combinations. Sometimes by Mozart himself (eg: string quintet version of the C minor wind serenade), usually by publishers (Andre) seeking to maximize financial gain from his popularity. I believe some, if not all, of the clarinet/string quartets are available from Musica Rara.
In a famous letter, Mozart once wrote about having to quickly transcribe arias from the Abduction from the Seraligio for wind octet before someone else did it.

The 3 Quartets arranged from the Violin/Piano Sonatas K378, K380 and the Piano/Violin/Cello trio K496 were arrangements for clarinet, violin, viola,and cello, presumed to be by Johann André. These were probably written in 1799 ...GBK
