Left leg in ... left leg out
Author: diz
Date:   2004-06-03 03:27

With all the sadness and trauma going on in the world at the moment, it is worth reflecting on the death of a very important person which almost went unnoticed last week.

Larry La Prise, the man who wrote "The Hokey Pokey," died peacefully at age 93.

What was really horrible was that they had trouble keeping his body in the casket. They'd put his left leg in and...well, you know the rest.

(I know it's an old joke - but I couldn't resist) ...GBK

Oddly overlooked is that he answered the greatest phenomenological and epistomological questions that were ever raised.

You see.... you do the hokey pokey.....and... THAT'S WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT!!!

and NOT the number 42

You mean, of course, seven plus or minus two (for seminal paper on information processing, see http://psychclassics.yorku.ca/Miller/).

Strange universe. Doug A. was only close :)

6 multiplied by 7 equals (=) 43--any clarinetist who can count knows that!!

(I came in too late AGAIN???)

Did anyone ever catch the version of the Hokey-Pokey in the style of William Shakespeare? It was from a Washington Post contest, and I believe the winning author's name is Jeff Brechlin. To wit:

O proud left foot, that ventures quick within
Then soon upon a backward journey lithe.
Anon, once more the gesture, then begin:
Command sinistral pedestal to writhe.
Commence thou then the fervid Hokey-Poke,
A mad gyration, hips in wanton swirl.
To spin! A wilde release from Heavens yoke.
Blessed dervish! Surely canst go, girl.
The Hoke, the poke -- banish now thy doubt
Verily, I say, 'tis what it's all about.

Those who understand binary math, and those who don't.

Actually it refers to the purchase of swine.

See, in midievil England one would buy a live pig in a sack (poke)
The merchant would substitute a cat.
Hence a pig in a poke

Now the cat would be placed in the bag, left foot first, since cats, as we all know, are left footed. The cat, not relishing the thought of being made into sausage (hence the term relish), would take its left foot out of the poke in an effort to escape. It would turn itself around and run off. So, it is a means of obtaining freedom....which it is all about.

So, this is how urban legends get started.

Look, if I tell you what it's all about, do you promise not to laugh?

Are you sure that it's NOT 42, Alseg? I've lived a good part of my life based on the 42 hypothesis. I'd hate to think that I've built most of my life around a defective concept. Please don't shatter the very foundation of my existence.

42
Actually that is number of items on the menu at the restaurant at the end of the universe. The waiter was pokey, and the winelist was hokey. So that is what it was all about.

Now, let's be careful with the 42 thing, 'cause If I remeber correctly, if anyone knew the question and the answer at the same time, the universe would disapear and be replaced by something stranger. Personally, I think our current universe is strange enough.

^Don't worry about the theory of the universe being replaced by a stranger one... there's another theory that states that this has already happened. And we turned out ok.

The subtext is that cellphones were invented due to the dearth of payphone disinfection techs.

Now if I could just figure out how to operate an elevator or use an automatic tollbooth....
