Hi all,
Does anyone have thoughts over a general music degree versus a music performance degree? Right now, I'm a music performance major, but some of the faculty is trying to get me just to do a general music degree. Music performance will never be my sole living, but I hope to play in various orchestras or something...something in between the Boston Pops and your local community band!! I'm not sure, but I just was wondering if it was worth it to almost kill myself to get the extra classes in for music performance in...but I'd be willing to do that! Any help would be great!!

P.S. I'm looking to buy this Buffet Prestige Festival...I've been playing on it this week and I am in love with it!!!! (Just thought I'd share...!)

I have always been of the thought, that you can perform off of any degree. If you practice, any degree is a performance degree. Your Bachelors degree sais to any employer that you are trainable, and can work hard. It could be in anthropology and an orchestra will still higher you if you are good.
As for what degree to choose, I would look for one that will teach you as much as possible, and has a degree of variation in it. So that it exposes you to as many different things as possible. There is a lot in this world other than a practice room and rehearsal halls. The more you are exposed to, the more different jobs you can be prepared for.

Consider this: any playing job you get in music will depend on your playing rather than your degrees. You don't say which faculty is trying to get you to change majors. If it's your clarinet teacher, listen carefully. The other music classes will certainly help your musicianship in the general sort of way, but if you are at a good college, there will be lots of classes that you might be interested in as well. You say you will have to "kill yourself" to get the music classes in. Maybe this is a signal that you should spend your music time in practice and your study time somewhere else. Of course, who am I to say this, not knowing you? Good luck in your choice. It's good to be thinking ahead.

First- do you want to be a professional player? I mean, the range between a community band and the Boston Pops is pretty severe.
In my humble opinion- performance degrees- and the performance career and lifestyle is something for the performer- for people who are called to play, who can't imagine doing anything else- for which music fills a void that nothing else could. It's not an easy way out- and not a glamourous life (though, I'm not sure that exists anymore).
Regardless of what ANYONE says- you need to major in what YOU love-
listen to your heart.
