There's a discussion currently on this board about wooden mouthpieces. Greg Smith gets my vote for the all time best wooden mouthpiece and customer satisfaction. I play on one and have played on it for about 2 years now in all kinds of conditions and am very, very happy. I've also tried other brands of wooden mouthpieces and liked them, but none as well as the gentleman from Chicago--Gregory Smith.

I used to play a Pomarico ebony wood mouthpiece, I think the -1 facing, or maybe the 1. I played it for 2 years and it got me a long way. You should consider them, especially if you don't have the money for one of Greg Smiths custom made ones.

a couple of years ago i tried a Pomarico wooden mp and was very pleased with the facing/response etc... a very playable mouthpiece with a tip opening around 1.10mm. Unfortunately this mouthpiece (and all the other Pmarico woodens i tried- about 7 in total) played very well in the clarion register, but had serious intonation problems down in the lower register. The upper register seemed more or less in tune, but all the "traditional" tuning problems down low were greatly exagerated.
This was using a Buffet R13 with a Moenig barrel- my usual mouthpiece is a Zinner i have refaced myself. Just my experience. A pity actually, as i loved the tone!

Walter Grabner at "clarinetXpress" makes one I believe - it's had very good reports- see threads.

Yes, Walter Grabner does make wooden mouthpieces. I bought a Cocobolo one from him. It's made from a Zinner blank and was very well done. The reason I went back to my Greg Smith is because I liked the tone of the Grenadilla wood. The Cocobolo was a bit bright for my taste. You might check him out as a good resource for wood. He also makes barrels.
