 Buffet R13 advice?!
Author: Barbara

My daughter is interested in a new Buffet R13 Bb clarinet. Can anyone tell me the differences between an: R13A; R13 Prestige; Greenline; Festival and the "standard" R13? I'm confused about the different models and prices! Which is preferable? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

--------------
R13A - R13 in the key of A
R13 Prestige - unstained wood, silver plated keys, extra lever, minor modifications from "standard" R13
R13 Greenline - made of grenadille dust & resin, guaranteed never to crack, essentailly identical to the "standard" R13 (but I _believe_ it's heavier)
Festival - similar to the Prestige - the modifications are slightly different
"standard" R13 - just that. Their base "pro" model.

If I can judge the "clarinet world" by what I've seen at ClarinetFests (and I don't really believe I can, but you gotta start _somewhere_!), the majority of people who played Buffets played the "standard" R13 model.

An easy suggestion would be to get a Buffet catalog, and read the descriptions. It quite a daunting, and personal decision. Many players play all of the above.

I have been observing [from afar] my cousin's efforts to provide the "best" Buffet for their "advancing" son, already having E 11 experience. In comparing the "standard" R 13 with the Vintage, they, with teacher and expert tryout, concluded that the "standard" was [slightly] to be preferred. My minimal acquaintance with Buffets [an R 13 and a C 12, along with a B 12 and several Evettes] tells me they are all very good buys in their own categories. Personal preference will dictate, but you can't go wrong. Don
