I saw the movie "Alice," about an American slave in Georgia who escapes her master and winds up in 1973. I won't say any more about the plot, but the terror-filled scenes at the plantation in the beginning are accompanied by very low double base and contra-bass clarinet, also very low. They do a great job of conveying the fear experienced by the heroine before she escapes.
I have played bass clarinet clarinet in orchestras since the 1970s and I always enjoyed playing "misterioso" parts when I had the opportunity. Some of the pieces I can think of are Bartok's Violin Concerto #2, Stravinsky's Ebony Concerto, Mahler's 1st Symphony, Resphigi's Pines of Rome and Rite of Spring.
