In defense of people who sell things ... they may not be aware of something that their "customers" have done. More than once I have ordered auto parts where someone has switched out the new part with their failed part and returned it to the distributor. If done really well it might skip notice. I can imagine something like that happening with instruments - after return if things "look right" it might just go back to stock, and unintentionally be re-sold. I know with my car parts that's what happened - it was obvious when I took them out of the sealed package and actually handled them (all were bearings).

Some people are devious and dishonest. What the business does after sale when something like this is pointed out is the real differentiator.
