Try tying a knot on one side of the cord, just below the pad, on the right or left. (See attached image, below.) The overall length of the cord will then be shorter, so the adjuster shouldn't come as far up and won't pull the sides together as much. (It will change the shape of the triangle above the adjuster.) Don''t pull too hard on the string so that you can get the knot undone easily. You will have to work the string through the adjuster to make both sides the same length again, but that should be super easy.

If that works, you can leave it like that or find a better knot.

If adding the knot works really well, you can shorten the string instead of having the knots. It looks like the string goes into little plastic barrels in the ends of the pad. If you push one of those out there is probably a hole in it, where you will find the knotted end of the string. Cut off the string a little bit, re-knot it, try it to make sure you can still adjust it, then cut off more, etc. Only cut off A TINY BIT at a time, remember the knot itself probably takes up half an inch or more. You might be able to leave the excess on and have it hanging down until you are sure. It's the same thing as knotting it like above, but permanent, so try the first suggestion first.

Alternately, you could make a spreader to go in above the adjuster. Use a dowel rod (1/2" or so diameter, as long as your neck is wide. Drill a small hole in each end, big enough for the string (you MUST use a vise to hold it while you do this - DO NOT try to hold it in your hand). Remove the ends of the string from the pad. Then slip the rod through the holes and reassemble, with the rod just above the adjuster. That's guaranteed to work. You can paint it black if you like. If the rod is too long, and causes problems, just make it shorter.
