I hate stretchy straps with a passion. Non stretchy straps allow me to eliminate the "lifting" portion of what the right thumb is doing so that all it has to do is push the clarinet away from the body a bit. I don't use a strap all the time, but during times when my desk job starts to cause me to get shoulder and arm tightness, a strap can help make sure that clarinet playing is not exacerbating it.
Your mileage may vary, of course. Some people like stretchy straps and I can't tell them they're wrong to like them. See if you can try both and figure out what you like.
