Beeswax is surely best. Here's why, it's simply to understand. Wood dries out and expands. Remember the metal rings at the joints and the bells how they become free from the wood so you have to refit them back on using assorted tricks of the trade? So if this metal pops out of the left thumb it's surely related to the wood shrinking. Well with the wax system for the thumb situation the wood is able to expand and contract freely. It probably won't ever pop out again. If we use epoxies and even shellac this I feel is wrong, because if that area wood around the hole ever cracks it "Might," be a difficult repair, if the repairman needs to remove that to fix and seal the crack by pinning.
If shellac gets inside of the bore as well as epoxies good luck removing this. Even the best repairmen will have a very difficult time.
Think out your thoughts carefully before doing repairs yourself. I'm surely not against people doing their own repairs carefully and correctly! I encourage this.
