funny pencil marking on old music

I got a chuckle the other day as I was practicing Shostakovich Festive Overture. I'm on a different part than usual. One section was marked "Don't Squeak". My questions are: 1. Isn't it understood that you shouldn't squeak? 2. Does marking it prevent the mistake in the same way as marking a sharp? 3. How noticeable would it even be in piece that lives in altissimo land?

1. It works for me so that I pay attention when I'm about to come up on a quirky note that may not speak correctly.

2. Does for me. Maybe not for anyone else.

3. Altissimo notes are "controlled" squeaks. Without the control, they're noise (unless you get lucky).

It must have helped someone back in the part's history. A lot of players' markings are to remind themselves of something they may forget in the heat of a difficult passage.

Haha festive overture... There are places where the clarinets are extremely exposed places especially during the string and clarinet call and response. I found it extremely fatiguing and especially during a concert because it's usually an opening piece and the conductors usually like to take faster than normal.

Only difference between notes and squeaks is intent

Clarinets don't squeak, they only play wrong overtones by accident.

Right before an altissimo Ab in the Eb Clarinet part of the new tour or Wizard of Oz, the part is appropriately marked, in ink, "Die." I know it is a stage cue, but an especially appropriate one for me.

What really gets me is when I come across a piece of music with altissimo notes and someone has penciled in the fingerings !

Jeez if you don't already know them by heart what are you doing playing that part ??

I think it is very understandable to write down the fingering for some altissimo notes as these notes usually have alternative fingerings. So if the most suitable one here is different from the one you usually use, you should do that as well. Please note some books even mention 30 fingerings for the highest C. Similarly, string players and piano players mark fingerings all the time. Publishers also print the fingering marked by some famous players.
