Ligature for e-flat clarinet (using Bb reeds)
Author: Carcamalisio

Hello! I am one of those who use a Bb reed on the eflat clarinet. My question is, what is better for this setup, an Eb ligature or a Bb ligature?

I have a pomarico mp for the eflat, and when I try to use my bonade eflat ligature it doesn't fit well (it moves, and the reed is not well grasped...) However, if I use my versa Bb ligature it works better.

Should I buy a new Bb ligature and use my Bb versa for the E-flat? What do you think is the best?

Thanks!

I find both my Harrison and Bay e flat ligatures work fine for b flat reeds on e flat, but for a long times I used a Vito student b flat ligature, but withmouthpiece patches on the inside of the metal, and the whole thing inverted... If you can picture that... This worked fine and my sound etc did not significantly improve when I changed to the bona fide e flat ligatures. Dn

A Rovner Dark Eb ligature might be a good option. It would have more tolerance than a metal ligature.

When I did this many years ago, I used the Eb ligature. But use whatever fits; it shouldn't make any difference.

Peter Leuthner Bb German Cut Pro reeds (available from Brad Behn) work very well on the Eb clarinet and fit well under most Eb clarinet ligatures. These Leuthners are narrower than French Bb reeds and feel very comfortable to the embouchure on an Eb mouthpiece.

I use a BG France Tradition Eb ligature with them.
