Back in the 90s, there was a production of Guys and Dolls that Red contracted the orchestra for. I remember watching the PBS special on the making of the original cast album, and there was Red, with headphones on, playing the intro to "My Time of Day" on alto. So he plays the intro, lyrically, and just dead-perfect...and then silence. After a moment everybody cracks up, and Peter Gallagher (who was supposed to sing the lyric) says "Red, you played that so beautifully I forgot to come in!"
It's a priceless moment, and once I was visiting backstage at Chicago and got to meet Red, and mentioned the clip to him. He just sort of shrugged and said, "Yeah, well, I had a good reed on that day."
Ohhhhh-kay.
