Reginal Kell--how did he end up in Frankfort, KY?
Author: tsmith

I'd appreciate it if anyone can tell me how the English (and later American) clarinettist Reginald Kell ended up in Frankfort, Kentucky, where the bios say he died after a long illness. I live nearby, and I don't remember ever hearing about his being there, although he had retired from playing many years earlier. Also, anyone know where he was buried? Findagrave.com is not of any help.

Can't answer the question, but I'm pretty sure his countryman Gervase de Peyer lived and performed recitals regularly up here in my area (Northern Virginia) for a while. In fact one of my few regrets in life is that I never went out to hear de Peyer play while he was here.

Hornist and fellow Englishman Barry Tuckwell also lived around here (probably in Maryland) and used to conduct the Maryland Symphony in Hagerstown. Must be something about the mid-Atlantic US that draws English players here....

Amazing. I thought anythng could be found via Google. But not the info. you mention. I can only mention that around 1948 a couple of first chair clarinet players of my acquaintance enrolled at the Univ. of Kentucky,Lexington which is not too far from Frankfort. Maybe R.K. was teaching there at the time but I have no factual basis.

The Clarinet ran a four-part biography of Kell in 2001. See http://www.clarinet.org/pdfs/journal/BK_Issue_Form.pdf

He had a long descent into Alzheimer's and was unreachable for many years before his death.
