Hi Paul

In my case the lower thumbrest simply "forces" the thumb into a position that it can't be tense. When it was higher I had to put my thumb in a good position for the clarinet, but when it is lower the clarinet just leans on it comfortably. If it makes any difference I'm guessing my hands are about average (or just a little bigger) and my thumbs are long (probably longer than most with same size hands).

By the way, although some (many?) players prefer a higher thumbrest I'm guessing if it was higher just as many would say it should be lower.
