Austin, I think another aspect is that humans want to transcend the
limits of their ordinary lives.

It's much easier to do this if a person starts with the premise that
their experience cannot be analyzed by ordinary logic or achieved by
explainable means, and therefore the person is allowed to experience
things in a 'different plane'. That is, a 'mystery' beyond normal
perception is involved. Something beyond 'common sense'.

It's interesting to think about why our language allows us to use the
phrase 'common sense' to mean 'logic' or 'rational thought' --- when we
simultaneously like to think of 'logic' as being a disembodied
discipline that is divorced from our physical senses.
