Isn't it human nature to introspect, even though the results often don't
conform to formal logic? Example: choice of spouse. You'd have a
difficult time convincing me that my choice didn't 'make sense'.

In the case of Beethoven's 9th, the harmonies were certainly different
than his earlier symphonies (when his hearing was less damaged). Thus
Vann could point to the harmonies as a key factor.
