In my experience that does *not* work out "pretty well" in most

You don't have to be a physicist, but it's one of the first principles
of science---be ready to say "I don't know" or "I'm not sure" when you
don't have a full understanding of the situation. It's a principle
that
works pretty well for lots of things. :-)
